Niho Takase is a passionate performer, dedicated educator, and lifelong student of music—especially Afro-Cuban and Latin jazz traditions.
Originally from Japan, Niho began her musical journey studying classical piano under the guidance of her aunt, an accomplished opera singer. This early foundation sparked a deep and enduring love for music.
After relocating to Vancouver, Niho enrolled at Vancouver Community College, where she studied Piano and Composition and earned her Bachelor of Music degree. It was there, performing with the Latin Jazz Ensemble led by acclaimed percussionist Sal Ferreras, that she discovered a profound connection with Latin music and its rich, syncopated rhythms.
Niho’s pursuit of musical excellence has taken her around the world. She received a prestigious grant from the Canada Council for the Arts, which enabled her to study Cuban music and composition in Havana with Grammy Award-winning pianist Chucho Valdés. While in Cuba, she also studied with Rodolfo Argudín "Peruchín" of NG La Banda.
Her commitment to mastering Latin music has led her to train with some of the genre’s most influential artists, including Rebeca Mauleón (author of 101 Montunos), Sonny Bravo (Tito Puente Orchestra), Elio Villafranca (Grammy-nominated pianist), and Iván "Melon" Lewis (Latin Grammy Award winner).
Niho is currently a member of MAZACOTE, a celebrated Latin fusion ensemble that earned a 2021 JUNO nomination for World Music Album of the Year.
She has graced the stages of renowned festivals and venues, including the Vancouver International Jazz Festival, Edmonton Jazz Festival, Victoria Jazz Festival, Calgary Jazz Festival, Winnipeg Jazz Festival, Saskatoon Jazz Festival, International Salsa Festivals, CBC Musical Nooners International Salsa Festivals, etc.
As a music educator, Niho brings warmth, versatility, and depth to her teaching. She works with students of all ages and levels, whether they are preparing for formal music exams, exploring popular music for enjoyment, or diving into the dynamic world of salsa and Latin jazz.
